My latest viola is coming along at a good pace considering I’ve only been working on it 2 days a week on average.

The F holes are carved.

I graduated the top.

And now the bassbar is fitted and glued! The whole body should be done by the end of the month.

It’s a jig that holds your plate so you can rough gouge out the inside. The beauty of this jig is that it also hold the plate up high enough so that you can get your caliper in to [...]

So I’ve started working on my 12th instrument, a 15 1/2″ viola of my own pattern. The spruce plate held a surprise once I cut it open.
A branch was hidden on the inside of the plate. Thankfully the majority of it I was able to cut out, but a small piece of it ended up [...]

http://www.flickr.com/photos/rsviolins/
I’ve started a new flickr account that has all my recent photos from the workshop. I’m noticing I’ve taken a lot of pictures of scrolls. Scrolls are very pretty and photogenic but in the latest instrument I’m making I’ll take more pictures of how the rest of the instrument is made.
There’s also quite a few [...]

From beginning to end this one took about 18months but it’s finally varnished, set up and playable. If I do say so myself, it sounds lovely.
Some background on Opus #9: it was my graduation exam instrument from the Chicago School of Violin Making (http://www.csvm.org/). I made the viola in its entirety and set it up [...]
